Explore MTBoS- Socratic Circles

I’ve been around the MTBoS for a little over a year now and it is hands down the biggest thing to change what I teach and how I teach it. I haven’t posted much recently due to the birth of my twins (also a 2.5 year old!), but I hope to get back as things start to normalize around here. I do read other blogs all the time- that’s easy to do 1 handed while feeding a baby! Currently attempting to post doing the same. Pretty slow going typing with one hand on my phone.

My favorite thing to do in class is a Socratic Circle. Last year I did one near the end of the year using one of Robert Kaplinsky’s lessons. Check them out- they are great! I am planning another one right now that I will post about after I do it… And when all 3 kids are sleeping at the same time.

Here is my previous post on the Socratic Circle- hereand here

  1. We, too, are an AVID school, though I have not taught the class, and I went to a Socratic seminar at the Northern CA math conference in Asilomar a few years ago.

  2. I’m so glad I had the assignment of reading/commenting on your task because I, too, have been wanting to bring in this interesting technique in my classroom! I teach Algebra 2, Precalculus and Calculus… thinking of ideas now. If you have any to share, please do!

  3. The sixth grade ELA teacher is teaching my students how to “do” a Socratic circle in her class. It never occurred to me that I might be able to piggyback on her work and try it in math too. I will check out the lesson you mentioned.

    • Our ELA teacher gets a grade out of it, too. The circle I am doing this unit is based on a fundraiser, students have to choose the best one from the 4. There are many factors, but math behind the decision. The kids love it!
